Outdoor Dining & Cooking Guidelines
Any business or property owner requesting to install a tent or canopy that is over 400 square feet, must apply for an operational permit through the Fire Department, any tents that will be installed for longer than 180 days shall also obtain an operational permit and may subject to site plan review. The permit shall include a diagram containing the following information:
All tents or canopies
· Square footage of the tent or canopy & location on the property
· All fabric shall have a CA State Fire Marshal tag indicating that it is nonflammable or has been treated
· Adequate anchoring or bracing
· A minimum of one 2A:10BC rated fire extinguisher shall be located under the tent with the current year either stamped on the bottom of the fire extinguisher or printed on the side of the bottle. A receipt shall be present with the bottle or have a tag with current year inspected.
· A class K fire extinguisher shall be provided if cooking with grease or a product that produces grease latent vapor.
· Egress points shall be identified, and they shall have “Exit” signs posted
· “No Smoking” signs shall be conspicuously posted
· Generators shall be twenty (20’) feet away, and all temporary lighting shall have GFCI protection
· No gas powered (propane) heaters are allowed under, or within ten (10’) feet of the tent
· Overall and detailed site plans shall be shown on property and roads prior to event
Cooking Tents
Cooking is permitted to be conducted inside of a tent canopy. The following rules shall apply:
· A minimum of three (3’) feet clearance shall be maintained between the appliance and the sides of the tent
· A non-combustible lid shall be available for any pots or pans
· One Class-K rated fire extinguisher shall be provided if greased latent vapors are produced
· Point of egress/ exit shall remain clear
· No fuel of any kind in the cooking area
· All tanks shall be secured or in a crate in a effort for fall prevention, fuel lines shall be secured at all times
· The tent shall have the California State Fire Marshal Seal on the tag of the tent.
Housekeeping
· All combustibles shall be removed (i.e. trash, boxes)
· Cleaning of all cooking surfaces shall be cleaned regularly to prevent buildup of grease
