New Business License Common Violations

1. 2A10BC, Fire Extinguishers shall be serviced on an annual basis (tag attached to the collar) or purchased within one year of the inspection (with receipt attached) and installed every 75’ @ a height of 36-42” inches from the ground.

2. Use of extension cords used as permanent wiring are not permitted.

3. Exit signage, and emergency lighting shall be functioning at all times.  

4. Occupancy load signage shall be in plain sight.

5. Signage over door shall be present, (This business shall remain unlocked during business hours)

6. Electrical panel shall be properly labeled, and all slots shall be covered, with a minimum 36-inch clearance around the panel.

7. All exits doors and exit pathways shall remain clear at all times.

8. If a Fire Alarm is present an inspection and maintenance tag shall be present and serviced within two years

9. Manual flush bolts are not permitted and shall be removed.

10. All sprinklered buildings shall have a Knox box in place with the current keys installed.

11. Multi-plug adapters are not permitted unless surge protection is in place.

12. All open junction boxes shall have a cover plate attached.

13. Addressing shall be present and at least 4 inches in height with contrasting colors of the building with either back lighting or with numbers lighting.

14. All exit hardware shall be functioning at all times.

15. Fire Hydrants located on your property must be visible and accessible at all times, paint yellow with all caps functioning and with three feet of clearance on all sides and no parking within 10 feet.

16. Exit doors must open easily from the inside; with no more than 15 pounds of pressure. Locking mechanisms on doors shall not require special knowledge or keys.

17. Fire sprinkler systems shall be serviced and tested annually by a licensed C-16 contractor.

18. Fire suppression systems for commercial cooking operations (Hood Systems) shall be serviced and tested every six months by a licensed C-16 fire protection contractor.

19. Combustible materials shall not be stored in mechanical or electrical rooms.

20. A permit for the use, storage, and handling of flammable liquids in excess of 10 gallons is required from the Fire Department. Flammable and combustible liquids must be stored in their original unopened containers. Once opened, flammable liquids must be stored in approved safety containers. Storage in excess of 10 gallons must be in an approved flammable liquids storage cabinet.

21. Provide a 30-inch minimum clearance between heat producing appliances and combustible materials.

22. Repair or replace all holes in walls / ceilings (i.e. missing ceiling tiles) in fire resistive construction.

23. Reduce storage to 18 inches below the level of sprinkler heads or 24 inches below the ceiling in building with no sprinklers.

24. All rack storage that is 12 feet tall and higher requires an operational permit. This will ensure proper design methods that require minimum compliance of seismic anchoring, structural design, and load bearing capabilities, as well as proper aisle spacing and related exiting requirements. As the height increases in rack storage, other requirements and permits will be required from the fire department. Keep all aisles and flue spaces (areas between racks when fastened together and the racks and walls) clear.

25. Compressed gas cylinders shall be secured at all times; cylinders and tanks shall be secured to prevent falling caused by contact, vibration or seismic activity.

26. Propane shall not stored indoors. Outdoor storage is minimum of 5 feet from exit door and exits pathway.

27. A 704 Hazardous Materials Placard is required outside any room/building containing hazardous materials.

28. Fire lanes are clearly marked and free of obstructions.

29. A 3-foot unobstructed clearance space shall be maintained around hydrant(s), backflow(s), and FDC(s); FDC(s) are clearly visible and accessible, caps are in place; Signage present on FDC, is legible, and indicates the address and area(s) served.

30. Elevators shall have required signage directing to stairways and not to use elevator in fire emergencies.
