When to Call 9-1-1

The Brawley Fire Department respond to thousands of calls for assistance each year.  Here are a few tips that can help the fire department help you during an emergency.

Call 9-1-1 to Report:

  • A fire
  • A serious medical condition
  • A serious crime
  • Any incident that may require an immediate response from the fire or police department

What you will need to provide:

  • The address or location of the emergency
  • The nature of the emergency
  • Any other information that you can provide to the 9-1-1 operator

When talking to the 9-1-1 operator, stay calm, speak clearly, answer questions that may be useful, receive instructions and stay on the telephone until you are told to hang up.

Arriving emergency vehicles:

  • Have someone wait near the street to direct fire or police personnel to the emergency.
  • Only when it is safe!, stay at the scene to provide fire or police personnel with information.
  • If you are asked to move or leave the area, do it safely so fire and police personnel can perform their jobs in a safe manner.

Other tips:

  • Make sure your address is visible from the street.
  • Make sure your address is well light at night.
  • Keep hydrants near your home clear of weeds, debris, and parked cars.
  • Never paint hydrants in your area with various colors.  The fire department rely on the standard "yellow" color for easily identification.

If you are not sure if you should call 9-1-1. Call anyways.
